The train drivers guide to Tri
Welcome to my world.I'm going through a mid life crisis and trying to be the best i can at triathlon with very limited ability! I work as aTrain Driver on the East Coast Main Line, and thought writing this blog would show people who work awful shifts can try and fit in a great sport and keep you fit! I've just been selected to be an ambassador for Xterra Wetsuits so expect plenty of pictures in their wetsuits!

Going cold turkey and Turbo!

DazzaTri72by DazzaTri72Mar 28th 2013
My name is Darren kelly and I'm addicted to chocolate and cake! There I've said it,a problem shared is a problem halved, and the problem I have is that my consumption of chocolate and cake has to stop!
So for the whole month of April I'm giving them up, not a crumb will pass my lips!(please note Easter falls in March, ha ha)!
Why? I hear you ask? A few reasons really, 1) I'm getting married in just over a month, so I really don't want my future wife to swing from my muffin top on the 1st dance. 2) Health benefits and 3) My 1st Triathlon is now Lincoln on the 21st April.
So thats 2 Triathlons I have now booked, as I said above Lincoln is now my 1st Tri and one I am looking forward to as a few friends are doing it, and the 2nd is Grantham a week after my wedding, so I have everything to train for and push as hard as i can in the next month or so.
As for training, well it's been going ok, despite the awful weather! I've done more sessions on the dreaded turbo trainer than i care to think about, but I am sure this will pay off once the nice weather comes (He says with fingers crossed)!
Think I've only been out twice on the bike in the last month, both good sessions though with high intensity and a good amount of hard graft despite the cold.
My running is still steady, I managed to do a 10k run the wind and snow last week and clocked 45.54, which I was pleased with as it was my 1st 10k since Tatton Park Tri back in September! Incidently my MRI scan showed I have been suffering with PF, so still on the recovery from that, my runs have to be very steady and listening to my body is a key element for me now! Unfortuantly I have learnt the hard way!
I really don't want to talk about my swimming as I'm finding it a struggle at the moment, think i would find learning Chinese easier! I feel like i'm swimming through treacle everytime I get in the pool! My technique needs serious work, but where and how do i do this??
Anyway, on the upside, I am buzzing about the season ahead and have seen a couple of races later on in the year to aim and work towards, both Olympic distance, I will be working hard to achieve my goals and smash a few PB's out!
On the socail side of things, tonight I am going out for a cheeky curry with Bourne Wheelers, I've recently joined them and as yet have not managed to meet any of them so see this as a good opportunity to meet a few of them and see what they are all about.
My club stamford Tri are going through a bit of a transistional patch and a few of us are trying to get things moving in the right direction, I'm very confident we will manage this as it's a great club, with some fab people and really good athletes who have helped me no end.
Anyhow, I hope you all have a great Easter and stuff yourselves silly so I can pass you on the bike!!!

P.S. Mum when you comment on here, everyone can see it, and I hope my grammer is better and it makes sense! ha ha...

Hi..my name's Jo Allen..soon to be Mrs kelly! :-) ..Mr Darren kelly's wife!
I have been reading and following Daz's Triblog and Triathlon career with interest. I think it's great! What a great idea to put it down in writing,to share with friends and family. I am not going to comment on any grammatical errors...I promise!
I admire and respect Daz hugely for all the hard work and determination he puts in to his chosen sport. He has a huge passion for Triathlon and puts 110% effort into all his training and events....this is not easy when we have a 2.5 year old and Daz works unsociable shifts!! Anyway,I won't chatter anymore...I do enough of that already!...
Well done Mr Lollard and good luck with the training....oh and Thankyou for helping to train me to become a better runner! I look forward to reading more installments....xxx

Good work Darren! The weather this year has not been kind to us triathletes and anyone who has managed to get out there deserves a pat on the back!

Swimming..... have you seen the swim smooth website http://www.swimsmooth.com/ I'd really recommend having a look through sometime, it's helpful with hints and tips for treacle swimmers!
