Too Many Miles
by DragonRunnerSep 4th 2016
So welcome and what is this blog going to be about? Well the #toomanymiles is following a unsuccessful attempt at completing Ironman Sweden just over a week ago. This was the first event that I have not completed in 15 years of the sport.
I live with a Neuromuscular / Spinal Cord condition called Thoracic Myelopathy and I am in my mid 50's so it would be easy to become a couch potato and not do anything, but for me that is not an option. My condition however was not the reason that I did not complete the event. It was something that I had not considered prior to the event, it was a simply fall, something which I do at least once a week.
To say simple fall, it was into a upright pole and the kerb edge, and some 7 miles later I was struggling to walk. My speed at that point was down to about a mile and a half an hour and with still 16 miles to go, there just we're not enough hours before cutoff. Still struggling to walk a week later it was probably the right decision, even if at the time it was a hard one to make after months of training.
So what am I going to do next is not something I have considered other than I know I am going to find an event to focus on. I had planned to travel to Newcastle in a few weeks for what would be my 10th Great North Run for 'Mind', which is something close to my heart. However we will see what happens between now and mid September.
This is going to be a blog on how I push my limits, and see what I can achieve and maybe, just maybe another Ironman race. Unclear if that is going to be Kalmar or another long course events somewhere. I need to set myself a challenge of this size to as I said earlier - push my limits.
Anyone that knows me will not be surprised to know that there will be a few endurance swims, but it will be back to basics over the next few months whilst I decide what the future holds, it will be something that I will have to considered myself as I self coach myself.
So whilst watching the Paralympics over the next weeks I will be considering my next challenge, this is going to be a short blog to start off, so thank you for reading and if you see me on the roads around South Wales. ,
