2014 - My Season

TriHardAlanby TriHardAlanDec 29th 2013
As 2013 ends I am now looking at 2014 and planning the season ahead. Well, I have of course been doing this for a while in terms of entering races as frankly you have to. With regards to my training I am still in off season mode with no structure and concentrating on my swim and of late trying to improve my run form by running everyday in my Newton MV2’s but without speedwork, well, apart from a couple of Parkruns. Training proper will start on the 6th Jan and I am confident of having a good base when it does.

The first thing about 2014 that will be different is what I am not doing. As stated before no Ironman and also no qualifiers or World or European Age Group Championships. The focus distance wise will be Olympic with a couple of Half Ironman’s for fun. I have no specific targets and will be looking simply to improve in all 3 disciplines and enjoy each race. Essentially, it will be a gap year before I get back to the serious stuff of qualifying for the World Age Group Championships in Chicago 2015.

In terms of racing it falls in to a few categories:

Early Season â€" Running

Wokingham Half Marathon; Done this one several times and always a favorite. After a DNF last year I feel there is a little unfinished business.

Surrey Half Marathon; A few things appealed about this race, firstly its 4 weeks before my spring marathon, it’s the first running of what looks like could be a big event and its local. A no brainer.

Greater Manchester Marathon; I am hoping to break convention with this and run it in racing flats, or more precisely my Newton MV2’s. Simply, I seem more efficient and niggle free in them. Time wise, hoping for a sub 3 but if injury gets in the way, and it often does for spring marathons, I will change the training to ensure a sub 3.15 and a Good for Age place in London 2015, where I may bring an end to my marathon career.

Main Season â€" Triathlons

British Sprint Championships, Eton Dorney; This is to put down a marker. No specific target, just want to see where I finish in my AG and then try to better it in 2015.

Outlaw Half Ironman; Most definitely for the fun of it. One Step Beyond events are always well organised and I did the first full Outlaw. Will enjoy going back to Holme Pierrepoint.

Windsor; Case of ticking a box for this as haven’t done this iconic event yet. Let’s see what the fuss is all about.

British Olympic Championships, Liverpool; I would have done this last year as it looked a great event but was in Roth. Much like the Sprint Champs will be a case of putting down a marker but above anything really looking forward to this one.

London Triathlon; This was my first triathlon in 2008 on a MTB, with a DNF due to a puncture! I went back in 2009 thinking I was so much more experienced and enjoyed immensely, despite it being a bit of a marmite event. For 2014 I will be in the sub 2.30 wave and think this is an event I can secure a good time in.

Thames Turbo Club Championship Events â€" Various

G3 10k Race 3, 10K Cross Country Champs; Hopefully a high scoring event for me but these are tough, the last time I ached for days after!

Thorpe Park Triathlon, Sprint Championship; Last year this was a one of, this year it’s one of 3 and our Sprint Champs and we have selected race 1 in June. Was huge fun last year and on my doorstep. Will fall in between the Outlaw Half and Windsor.

Worthing Triathlon, Olympic Championship; I don’t like this event, totally over rated for me. Being a sea swim doesn’t help. I am only doing this for the points. I have previously not performed well when my heart hasn’t been in a race, including the last time I did Worthing, so this will be an exercise in positive thinking and the mental aspect of racing.

Vachery, half ironman championship; This is another one entered just for the points. With an abundance of great Half’s in the UK this wouldn’t be my choice but it is local at least.

Jekyll and Hyde Duathlon; One of my favorites. Would have entered this regardless, great event.

On top of these will do some evening Sprints at Dorney and hope to fit in a Sprint before the British Champs, maybe a pool based one to shake the rust of. Will also do another Olympic or two with one definitely at Dorney. There will also be a Club Championship Aquathon, yet to be announced. I have only one Duathlon so far and not sure whether to enter any more, I do enjoy them but they are an injury risk so will ponder that some more. I am trying, very hard, to race less than last season, honestly :-)
