The Start Line

So, this is my first blog. As it says in the description it's going to be somewhere for me to put my thoughts down on paper and give me some practice of keeping a log/diary of my training/races.

I decided a couple of months ago that I would start a blog as I finished my PGCE and expected my training to really take off. However life always seems to throw a spanner in the works and things got in the way, this left me feeling downhearted and unprepared for the Bristol Sprint Triathlon where I was aiming for age group qualification for the world championships. After a disappointing race at Portishead I really began to start questioning if I should continue with the sport as I didn't feel that I was able to commit the time needed to compete at my best.

I went into Bristol with a certain amount of resignation, especially as I had picked up an injury in the weeks leading up to it, thinking that it could well be my last race. However, what little training I had put in had obviously worked, I finished 5th in my age group, doing enough to qualify for the world champs in October. My times weren't lightening quick but respectable considering the amount of training I had managed to put in. The experience of racing in a closed road, mass start race with lots of spectator support has reignited my passion for the sport.

So now I'm looking ahead to the rest of the season and the culmination of 5 years in the sport in October in Auckland, I'm really looking forward to racing with my team mate Chris and experiencing the sort of racing that can only come from a world championship event. Training has kicked in again, not going overboard as consistency has been a real issue this year due to other commitments but I'm building my milage slowing and beginning to feel good with some speed coming back.

None of this would be possible without the continued support of my family, friends and team, so I can't thank you all enough.

I intend to try and write a blog post each week, just to keep me focused on the job in hand and then for each race so that I can pick each race apart.
