So, I am a swimmer turned triathlete!

Swimming is obviously ok, biking not too bad but needs some strength work, running is my kryptonite!

Getting back to it! (Part 2!)

Wilkoby WilkoMar 10th 2011
It's nearly a year on from my last post on getting back to triathlon.

With moving, work and other commitments I got well out of regular training and exercise. It is a shame, but I'm not the kind of person to regret. It is an opportunity to learn and I am going to get back to where I was, and beyond.

Life has settled down somewhat since last year. I am now living in one location again rather than flitting between several places. I have my bike back up and running and I have Blackpool Aquatics swimming club to go to, which also has a multisport angle to it.

Compared to where I was when I was last competing, I have gained 20kgs, and several percentage points of body fat! I must say though, I feel like I look a lot healthier carrying a bit more weight, so I am aiming to maintain some of the weight, whilst cutting back on some of the fat. I am concentrating on keeping my high quality carb and protein intake high, but cut down on the saturated fats (I have got a great taste for hotel breakfasts!).

The next 8 weeks I am going to be breaking myself (S L O W L Y) back into running, and hopefully will avoid past issues with tight muscles. Part of this will be to develop a stretching routine for before and after exercise, and maintain my core strength workout I have been doing with varying regularity over the past year. I will include some regular Yoga sessions in my plan too.

On top of the running, when I am home I am going to attend the masters sessions with Blackpool Aquatics, cycling to the sessions where possible and a long ride during the weekend.

I feel like a politician writing a manifesto! Hopefully I can stick to it, I am going to try to be challenging, but realistic. To add to the motivation, I have made an investment in a new bit of kit - a Garmin 305 HRM with cadence and speed sensor for the bike, and re-using my old foot pod for indoor training.

I am not going to rush, I am taking the next few weeks to decide on some SMART goals to work towards. Stay tuned for updates...
Post of the Week

With less than two weeks to go to the Edinburgh Marathon, and everytime I run seeming to have ridiculously tight lower legs. I think I have isolated it to where I think the problem lies. Trouble is, when I run it seems to transfer to the front of my...

It has been a good week for exercise this week. I have got in a good few miles, and I feel OK for it. I have made sure I have plenty of rest time which has paid off. Did suffer a little from some shinsplints on Friday, but nothing a quick kick a...

I am trying to return to my previous blogging-ness. So the posts of the week are back. I have arrived after a surprisingly quick hop on a small turbo-prop to Duesseldorf, a very pleasant city. I have realised however, that having had a custom ma...
Embarking on a voyage

Here begins the next voyage in my work life, I am sat in Manchester airport wondering how I got here, feeling a bit chubby and lathargic and facing the impending doom of the realisation I a running a marathon in just under 5 weeks time. I took so...
