Middle-aged, middle-weight, mother of 3 on mad marathon mission
Middle-aged, middle-weight, mother of 3 on mad marathon mission
When I started this blog, it was to track my progress from an occasional kayaker to taking on the Devizes to Westminster non stop 125 race. Little did I know that would start me on a long distance obsession which has resulted in my completing the 30th Marathon des Sables. It has been a strange and sometimes painful ... but always wonderfully challenging journey

This is my occasional account of a middle-age mother's attempt to take on things which are really quite beyond her.

50 but not out
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Dec 29th 2011
When I was 15 I grandly declared that when I reached 50 I was going to kill myself as there was no reason to carry on after that point. As the dreaded age approaches, I find that my daughters are not fully supportive of my teenage plans, so I've come...
Competitive, Addicted or just plain OCD?
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Oct 25th 2011
I've known for a very long time that I have an addictive personality but generally, I can use that focus for good. My slightly obsessive qualities become really evident when competition is involved - whether it's playing freecell on my phone or wipi...

1. Woke up on time (actually only had 3 hours sleep and minimal food); 2. VERY dark, at one point was surprised at how wide the river was and discovered I was paddling at speed straight for the bank; 3. Guy provided excellent support at 3 points th...

Tomorrow morning at 4.30am (yes, 4.30AM) will see me set off on my most nerve-wracking undertaking to date. I'm paddling 30k to raise money for the NZ Earthquake appeal ( ) and while I'm nervous of paddling completely on my own in th...
Commuting by Kayak
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Mar 2nd 2011
Because I have been so affected by the Earthquake in New Zealand, I'm doing a sponsored paddle this Friday. Rather than just do a normal paddle, I've decided to commute door to door from my home near Godalming to my school in New Haw (near Woking). I...
Me or the Bearded Lady of Guildford?
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Feb 20th 2011
I seem barely able to go out training these days, without someone stopping and taking a photograph of me. As I've seen the way I look when I come off the water, I know they are not moved to record an image of great beauty. The truth is a bit more pro...
Motivation and that competitive spirit - who has it and why?
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Jan 8th 2011
While I've been languishing in my sick bed over the past week or so, I've been contemplating motivation and why some people seem to have it working in overdrive, while others leech apathy from every pore. At school, I have students (primarily tee...
And it was going so well....
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Jan 8th 2011
Now I'm sure it had nothing to do with paddling through blizzards and ice-storms, but oh my, I've been hit by 2 shocking types of flu ... the second bout of which, didn't even have the decency to wait until I was recovered from the first. So I g...

Have decided to undertake the DW (125 mile canoe race) at Easter next year. Lots of things could go wrong before then, but it feels so good to have an aim and a definitive goal. Along the way there will be some Waterside Races and hopefully a huge ga...
