Middle-aged, middle-weight, mother of 3 on mad marathon mission
Middle-aged, middle-weight, mother of 3 on mad marathon mission
At some point during December 2010, I agreed to partner a friend to do the DW - a 125 mile canoe race, through the night at Easter. After a few close calls (dislocated knee, flu, heat-stroke) we did it.
It took us 3 hours longer than we had hoped, but severe sunstroke and an inability to keep down food and drink made us adjust our plans. We still came 2nd in our division and are in the top 50 of all female crews who have ever paddled the race.
And like childbirth, just a day later we were contemplating our 2012 DW race... but this time we'll be starting from a position of marginally more fitness!

This is my occasional account of a middle-age mother's attempt to take on things which are really quite beyond her. ( www.kayakingkiwi.co.uk )
And when that's done, I'll be looking for a quadrathlon to do...

50 but not out

When I was 15 I grandly declared that when I reached 50 I was going to kill myself as there was no reason to carry on after that point. As the dreaded age approaches, I find that my daughters are not fully supportive of my teenage plans, so I've come...

Yes, this non athletic paddler actually managed to get a medal at the national marathon championships in August (we're talking kayaking). It's been a good summer - watching my daughter win at the World Quad championships in the Czech Republic, time i...
Race Day Report Part Two - World Quadrathlon Championships. Tough on the Supporters too.

The role of supporter is hugely under-estimated - all the focus is on the athlete, but the organisation and demands on those of us left holding the water bottles and outer-layers is simply not understood. Our preparation, health, fitness, lung capaci...

It has been a little long in coming - but I've finally had a moment to put some words together about the World Quadrathlon Championships and our trip to the Czech Republic. Marthe, myself and Chris (my sister) were all heading to Sedlcany for the rac...

Ok, so I am not personally competing but my daughter is and my role as chief supporter has never been more important. I'm happy to take my participation vicariously. After such a long battle against the debilitating effects of glandular fever, this i...
World Quadrathlon championships - here we come
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi Jun 26th 2011
Ok, not as a competitor, but I'll be there to experience the race vicariously through my daughter who hopes to compete in the youth division. After so many years away from triathlon races, it seems strange to be getting the road bikes dusted down, d...
Going Long - gets under your skin
crawlingkiwiby crawlingkiwi May 1st 2011
Since completing my absurdly long 125 mile race last weekend in very hard conditions and with a very high drop-out rate, my paddling partner and I have been searching around for something else to focus on. I have found an adventure race we could ...

Couldn't get down to the club yesterday so did a long walk with dogs and a daughter. Today I managed some intervals to Guildford and back - cold and in the sleet, but worked well. I love being out on the river and working hard, but need to build in m...
