London 2013; Misty eyed optimist?
London 2013; Misty eyed optimist?
With the season over for 2012, sights are now set on the ITU World Champs in London in September 2013. Qualification race booked at the Dambuster in June, so 7 months of graft awaits!

Arduous Alicante

Day 1 of the preparation for London qualification - Monday 12 Nov. I have had a good rest over the last couple of weeks since finishing in Auckland with just the odd session to keep my eye in. Qualification for the Worlds in September is going to be very tough, everyone is going to want to be there, particularly after the successes of this year (not just in triathlon but in British sport). But it begins today; the monastic existence, long hours of training and persistent tiredness! Remind me why we do this to ourselves?

In fairness, I have a very appealing start. I have just arrived in Alicante on for a week of cycle training in the hills surrounding the Sierra Bernia on the Costa Blanca. Can't wait to get there and start rolling, brought all the gear with me; bike, wetsuit and running kit. The aim is to get some good solid hill-work done on the bike but to also get in the sea and exorcise the Auckland Harbour swim demons (still beating myself up about that disastrous swim).

I have been psyching myself up for the trip by watching the Garmin Barracuda Cycle Team Winter Training video on YouTube. I already know the roads fairly well due to holidays in the area, so have a good idea about what awaits; some great climbing, smooth Tarmac and hopefully some reasonably warm weather in comparison to the ever increasing night / winter conditions in the UK! Although it has been raining here today apparently and it is blowing hard outside as I write.

The house we are staying is cool, there are lots of rock climbers here (not sure how they are going to take to my cycling mate John and me in Lycra!?!?! Haven't seen anything else yet as we arrived in total darkness, but aim to hit the roads first thing. I forgot how bloody hilly it was here, should have brought the defibrillator!

Will see how it goes tomorrow and will obviously report back.

Hasta ma├▒ana!
