London 2013; Misty eyed optimist?
London 2013; Misty eyed optimist?
With the season over for 2012, sights are now set on the ITU World Champs in London in September 2013. Qualification race booked at the Dambuster in June, so 7 months of graft awaits!

Spain - Who booked this weather?

jamesrunchmanby jamesrunchmanNov 13th 2012
Who said that the weather was going to be good in Spain this week? I wasn't expecting it to be tropical, but at least around 18 - 20 degrees. This prediction has proved to be on a Michael Fish level! It hasn't stopped raining since we arrived and it is bloody freezing! The cold and wet I can take, as it is not as bad as UK for this time of year. But the wind! This has been atrocious, to the point where we have been without power for about 6 hours in the house! It has only just come back on, not a massive issue but one that we could do without! Last night in bed, the noise of the wind whistling through the trees was unbelievable, I half expected to hear a wolf howling, it sounded like a scene from a horror movie. I would not have been surprised if during the night a vampire had crashed through the bedroom door (although they can't come in without being invited! Can they?)

The wind almost put a downer on the days cycling, at times on the hills we almost came to a complete standstill and were blown over a couple of times. But it was still worth ever minute, the scenery is stunning (when the clouds part and you can see it - see photo for evidence) and the climbs are fantastic, endless ascents on immaculate Tarmac. The descents were equally as good, I had to stop myself from giggling out loud at times it was so enjoyable! Did about 4 hours in total and then a 40 minute run off the bike, which was almost as challenging in the hellish conditions (cold, wet and hilly).

No power tonight so we had to eat out in a local Chinese restaurant. An "all you can eat buffet" for 10 euros, I think I have eaten about 50 euros worth and can now hardly move. We had a quick look at the beach this afternoon and plan to get a sea swim in first thing tomorrow morning, if I can zip up the wetsuit after the Chinese! Then going to do a coastal ride heading north to Moraira and Javea, hopefully the wind will have abated!

The Spanish is disappointingly a bit rusty and am struggling to remember even the simplest of phrases which I am putting down to oxygen depletion from the hills today. Will try a bit harder tomorrow, it might come back but at the moment I can just about order food and pass pleasantries! Onwards then to day two - going to ditch the water bottles for a thermos!

Oh no! What happened to the rain in Spain being mainly on the plain! Glad that it doesn't seem to have dampened your enthusiasm.
