Just for the Sake of it.

I haven't written a blog post here for a while. Mainly because I was in New Zealand for the ITU Triathlon World Championships.

The race in Auckland went really well, despite not having run for 12 weeks prior due to a stress fracture I finished in 11th place in a time of 1:09:19 and I think I even beat my 5k PB. I say 'think' because the run course was actually 5.3km in length which I did in a time of 18:36.

And while you're reading about it, just remember that the fact that I could train for, get to and compete in such a race is thanks to my sponsors and supporters. I can't thank them enough - certainly not if I want them to keep helping me out next year! I'd still really like to find a sponsorship deal with a triathlon related company though if anyone has any suggestions. Talking of next year, I was 2nd Brit in my Age-Group which should have automatically qualified me for a place on Team GB for next years World Champs in London. What with that and the European Champs in Turkey I'm going to have a busy year.

After the race I spent 2 glorious weeks travelling around New Zealand with my family. Followed by a week of writing about all the experiences and places we visited on my weblog. Hot water beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls, zip-wires, caves, Kiwis, hot rivers, mud pools, thermal spas, some epic surf and even a road bike race. Yep, whilst in New Zealand I took part in the 'Bike the Lake' road race around Lake Rotorua. My race came down to a sprint finish in which I came 2nd by 3 hundredths of a second!

Mind you, I took the word 'holiday' a little too literally and really had a good rest after the triathlon in Auckland. So much so that I put on 11kg in weight during the two weeks - thanks mainly to the delicious cakes on offer everywhere!

I'm now back in the UK and its time to get back to the training. Nothing structured for a while though I'm planning to just swim, bike and run for the sake of it. If the weather's good and I fancy a decent ride then so be it. If I don't feel like it then I'll take it easy. I shall be laying off the cakes for a while though!

The plan is to 'do it for the sake of it' until the New Year and then really start ramping it up properly ready for my races next year.

Knowing me I'll probably end up doing just as much as when I have a structured plan, but mentally it will be refreshing not to 'have' to do something. Come the New Year I should be full of motivation and raring to go... Which is a lot more than can be said for me when I crossed the finish line in Auckland. 'Finished' was the operative word, in more ways than one.

Surely that's what holiday are for! Well done on qualifying for next year already, that must take the pressure off a bit and so exciting that London is the venue for next year!

Yep, glad I don't have to do the qualifiers, especially as they are all in June and I'll be doing the European Champs in Turkey in the middle of June. Seems a bit silly that all the qualifiers are also in June.
