Can anything else go wrong? Race Depression

marshrgby marshrgMar 4th 2012
It is all (mostly) my own fault.... I should have checked / sorted all of these things a week earlier...

Saturday morning I took the race bike out for a pre race spin... I felt good and fast, slight twinge in the left knee prob not warmed up yet, powered past other serious cyclists - but I was in TT mode it felt good. Apart from a front wheel stability niggle.... and a rear derrailuer skip...

Got home thinking - awesome can't wait to really apply some power tomorrow, just need to sort out that front wheel and trim the rear mech tonight. Went to (unamed) LBS to get some new front wheel BBs. Got home and fitted, span wheel on hand - super smooth - can't wait...

Put wheel back on bike to trim brake - ahhh even with the brake on cammed out removed wheel setting the brakes were binding alternately on either side. Damn my new wheels for not being delivered earlier damn me for not doing this earlier. Calm down marsh... Went to good local bike shop - Bums on Bikes, they tried for an hour (despite closing time) to true the wheel - (awesome LBS with exceptionaly patient and helpful staff). Rim knackered (from 2010 crash I guess) and spokes equally as shot... Thankfully an extremely generous and inspirational chap lent me his own personnal front wheel for the race. - Phew thank god for good samaratans - pop back home retrim the rear mech, big feed pack gear early night.....

In between make protein shake - last bit of recovery juice - cut finger wide open on stainless shaker (now in bin), blood every where - what else can go wrong???? big feed trim mech pack an early night....

Retrim rear mech - wasn't going that well either wouldn't trim to top or bottom end of cassette, try taking a little slack out of the cable.... Try retrimming - looking better.. looking worse - whats happened I can only select 2 gears.... Strange buldge on underside of aero bars - cable out has ruptured and split / cut in half by inner...

Almost cryed, and came to the conclusion that for this race there was no point - it was 2100 hrs at night and zero chance of getting a replacement. My wife (maika) concluded that there was nothing that can be done and promptly looked on the internet to find a replacement event. 10 minutes later I was registered on the Mooloolaba festival olympic course in three weeks time. An event that was closed for entries when I last looked.

Thank you wife you are awesome and know how to challenge me and make me feel better.

So today I threw off those cobwebs, put the pre-race recovery game back in the draw and set to giving myself a damn good thrashing..... and it felt good. (I went pretty quick too!)

Oh no! Best laid plans and all that! However, makes you feel good to know that there's people out there who will help you out by lending their stuff!
