Royal Parks Ultra marathon

mhowoodby mhowoodOct 9th 2012
Beautiful day for a 50km run through the streets of Westminster, and the Royal Parks.
Things were going well, and I was consciously sandbagging my HR, focusing on just getting to the 40km mark at Hampton Court, 45km at Kingston and then into the familiarity of Bushy Park.
Got slightly over excited when we came to Richmond at 36km, and ditched the plan - switched off the HR alert on my Garmin and just ran. All was fine for the next 10k but paid for it over the last the 4. Legs, back, everything cramping up and forcing walking breaks. Lost a few places but happy to scrape under 4:05 in my over-marathon distance.

Great to see my wife and kids at the finishing chute, and
Salomon even flew in some 'ultra ringers' specially for the event in the shape of Theodorakakos Dimitrios and Silvia Serafinii, winning their categories in 3:25 and 3:39 respectively.

Finished in 04:04:52. 10th male and 14th overall for my first 'Ultra' - well, it's just a lo-o-ong marathon really. ;)
A great event!
...and the hot showers at the end? Genius!

Where are my manners?!
Massive thanks to The Royal Parks Foundation Ultra for my place! I was one of the Marathon Talk listeners lucky enough to win an entry, by naming the 8 Royal Parks.
