So I'm now a pirate, (ie normal people who are inspired by the runners world forumites doing IMs)..... This involves drinking beer, buying lots of yellow kit, oh, and a race or 2 a year to give it an objective.

I bumped into the pirates via the runners world magazine / forum, and they gave me the confidence to dare enter an IM.


2010 IMDE - flat, Outlaw - flat
2011 IM Regensburg 2011 - flat, IMWales - hilly, oh so windy
2012 Lanza - hilly and windy
2013 - IM Lanza - the return :-)

Recovering from knee issues, (too many rugby injuries) so now the plan is to swim OK, be an Uber Biker, and just let the run take care of itself. Oh Well

June....... and time to up the distances a bit and concentrate on race pace.

then my left knee starts aching a bit

then it starts swelling up......

so running volume drops off and its off to the physio. I was very impressed when he said the swelling is just due to old age!!! - bastard. Anyway I am now doing lots of functional strength training to boost the hammies / glutes, and trying to also start running with a bit more style.

biking - did the chiltern 100 again - chain off 3 times, 2 punctures, and home in 6.50. Last year I got around in 6.35.......I think I smashed it a bit too early and ran out of steam... oops

then did an over distance ride the following weekend - 8 hrs

then did the flat out in the fens sportive - essentially just TTd it and came in in 5.45, ( but had to wait for my buddy a bit)

swimming - did a 3.8k in 1.17 - really happy

More thoughts re coaching

running injury has hurt things

I am hitting sessions consistently

I have something different each week for swim / long sessions - good for motivation

I am finding training more fun, and don't like missing sessions - its definitely more motivating.
