O.rangeCannon's pirate journey!!!!!!!
O.rangeCannon's pirate journey!!!!!!!

So I'm now a pirate, (ie normal people who are inspired by the runners world forumites doing IMs)..... This involves drinking beer, buying lots of yellow kit, oh, and a race or 2 a year to give it an objective.

I bumped into the pirates via the runners world magazine / forum, and they gave me the confidence to dare enter an IM.

2010 IMDE - flat, Outlaw - flat
2011 IM Regensburg 2011 - flat, IMWales - hilly, oh so windy
2012 Lanza - hilly and windy
2013 - IM Lanza - the return :-)

Recovering from knee issues, (too many rugby injuries) so now the plan is to swim OK, be an Uber Biker, and just let the run take care of itself. Oh Well

Cowman 1/2 IM

A recent knee injury meant little running over the weeks before - when I was allowed to run, their definition of a short run did not match mine ;-)

Anyway, I like this half IM business - all done by lunchtime, burger on the way home, then still enough time to meet the missus down the pub!

So I was up at 5, porridge got eaten, sorted bike out then off to transition.
usual pre race chat / discussion with the piratey people, then wetsuite on, into the pond and arrgghhhh. Toilet break over, it was a quick warmup followed by us being off rather sharpish. things got rather congested but overall I enjoyed the swim. no duck shit in sight, surprisingly clear and just shallow in a couple of bits.

out in 35 mins so really happy

off on the bike, and sort of hammered it from the start. I thought my HR strap was on the blink, but no, my HR was high coz I was motoring.
Again, falling out of the swim mid pack means I was surrounded by carbon wheels, so had to shift it to overtake people.
no wind, and just gentle hills so it was really the bike in 2:35 - avg hr at 148, but it felt higher...

so - off on the run, and again motored too quickly. 22 mins for the first 5k, (I did my first park run on the previous day and did 19:45!!) so slowed a little, as it got hot. just carried out counting 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 to keep the cadence up.
Rolled around the run 1:35 (hr155) for a total of 4:49. The knee survived so I am really happy

Did this 2 years ago in 5:45 so that goes to show what a road bike and a bit of the T word / 2 years of IM prep can do!

Good to see all pirates in in some shape or other

Results overall :- swim: 37%, bike: 15%, run: 18%
Age group: swim: 40%, bike: 15%, run: 19%
