O.rangeCannon's pirate journey!!!!!!!
O.rangeCannon's pirate journey!!!!!!!

So I'm now a pirate, (ie normal people who are inspired by the runners world forumites doing IMs)..... This involves drinking beer, buying lots of yellow kit, oh, and a race or 2 a year to give it an objective.

I bumped into the pirates via the runners world magazine / forum, and they gave me the confidence to dare enter an IM.

2010 IMDE - flat, Outlaw - flat
2011 IM Regensburg 2011 - flat, IMWales - hilly, oh so windy
2012 Lanza - hilly and windy
2013 - IM Lanza - the return :-)

Recovering from knee issues, (too many rugby injuries) so now the plan is to swim OK, be an Uber Biker, and just let the run take care of itself. Oh Well

Vit Race report

I wasn't really supposed to be entering this, I was to be the wife's super sherpa / 'bunny bitch' (thank's to Rio's Bitch for my new nic-name), but as I was going to be there, it would be rude not to do the event so....

I'd done very little since the outlaw, really a case of CBA, but I wanted to beat lasts years time, and
hopefully get below 5hrs this time, so the plan was really just hammer it....

I'm not the best swimmer, but I have really enjoyed swimming in the races I've done this year. Until the vit that is. From a 1/3 of the way around, I just wanted this to be over. I was getting bashed all over the place, could not see any thing to sight off due to the fog, just had to stay with the other swimmers - I just hated it.
Then lap one was over, and I promptly got swum over by the women starting just behind me. I hated that as well...

Just at the end I started to settle a bit, but oops time to get out. 39 mins. That's a whole 2 minutes slower than last year despite a winter spent swimming.... (See training really pays off....!! I am booked in for a set of swim lessons now.)

So off on the bike, keeping the heart rate up a bit above IM pace, and it was.. foggy! Got half way up the Ripple before I recognised it. Then along the next flat bit feeling the fog condensing on me - nice... Finally the sun started to break through. Last year I bombed around this on my hybrid, and I remembered shooting up the hills, then running out of gears on the flats. This time it was spin up the hills taking it easy(ish) then crank it out on the flats, down on the tri bars. Don't think I am a 'pretend triathlete' any more.
Only saw Mandel on the bike... Hoped I would not see Shuffle(my missus) as that would be bad.....
Bike feed station was very loud.

Of the bike in 2:31, 17 mins faster than last year. I blame the road bike and the tri bars for that

Again I was going to push this the whole way, with no run-walk.
It hurt
And each lap felt a lot longer than an IM lap.....
So it was run, push, high 5 pirates, push again, keep going, pick up a band and repeat.
That dam is very wide, and the stretch to the church is even longer. Funkin flew by several times, joined by Meli, But then it was time to headback home, (Cona I had no chance of caching you). Started seeing all the remaining pirates coming the other way, but no Shuffle, (that was bad).
Up the final slope(ouch) and head for home. Final saw Shuffle, so a quick hug, she was grinning as her back had not seized, and off she went, so off I went across the line for a run in 1.37, 6 minutes faster than last year.

Lots of Tangfastics, but no freddos.

So a new ½ marathon pb, and a ½ IM pb of about 4:54, (down by 18 mins from last year). I don't know how to get much faster though, (except do another years training maybe.?)

Great pirate racing, support and post race beerage.

I had a great weekend
