Time for a new challenge
Time for a new challenge
When I got out of college I found myself 50 pounds overweight and working 2 jobs, and working out was not a priority. Then one day it changed. No great inspiration other than my wife was losing weight, and I wanted to as well. I started by telling friends and family that I was going to run a 5k. Then I moved on to a 4 mile race, and last year a rather hilly and challenging 7 mile race (The Bix in Davenport, Iowa). But triathlons have always fascinated me. So that is my new challenge.

Physical Therapy

Yes, as the title suggests, this offseason has not gone as planned. 6 weeks ago was the last time I was able to lift weights. After my last weight session, my right shoulder was extra sore. It was worse the next day, but by Monday it was feeling a bit better. But for the next 4 weeks it didn't really get any better. So I went to the doctor, and he gave me 2 weeks of anti-inflamatory medicine and 8 sessions of physical therapy. Apparently I have a shoulder impingement (sp?). So I have to strengthen my rotator cuff and I should be good to go. I've already had 3 sessions over the last 2 weeks. I have been doing some exercises every night. And I am finally seeing some improvement, so that is good. But 2 of my 3 goals this offseason were improving my strength and improving my swimming technique. I haven't lifted weights for 6 weeks and I haven't swam for 4-5 weeks. The physical therapist said I shouldn't swim, and I assumed that I shouldn't lift either. It's also stopped my core exercises because they involve a lot of leaning on my arm. So needless to say, I have been doing a lot of running and biking on my new trainer. I really like my new trainer.

Hopefully I will be fully healed soon and back on track. On another note, I decided this year I will add a half marathon to my list of races. Then maybe a 1/2 ironman distance race in 2012.

Oh no! I had the same problem impingement amd tendonitus in my right shoulder. So frustrating, I didn't swim for 18 months and very painful at times. Did you manage to get yours sorted out? I'm still doing rehab rotator cuff exercises now and I'd say 90% better and able to swim again, although always slightly worried that it might flare up again.

For the last 2 years, I have been wearing knee braces. I don't have any knee problems yet, but there is a long history of knee problems/replacement in my family. So I looked at it as preventative maintenance. But I never have like wearing them. I...

Thanks to a day off, and fairly warm weather, I got to take the new bike out for a spin. I road it around the block I live on a few times just to get used to it. It was my first time on a tri bike, after all. After getting everything adjusted, I t...

My first race is done. Looking back I know there are a couple areas I need to work on. First is by biking. I need more speed. Second is swimming technique. Someday I would like to do an Ironman so I would really like to get my technique down. L...
Earning the title

I am a triathlete. As of about 10:45 on Sunday morning. I had never called myself that before because I felt I should complete a race before taking on the title. I even made (both) my goals. My stated goal was 3 hours. But the week before, I rea...
