Can I be an Ironman by 40 ?
Can I be an Ironman by 40 ?
Having taken part in several pool based sprint events since starting out in 2009, I wanted to celebrate turning 35 by completing the Vitruvian in 2011...with a long term goal of completing an Ironman by the time I'm 40. I'll keep track of the trials and tribulations here.

Don't panic Mr Mainwairing...

It's a little over a week until the Cheltenham Half Marathon, my first event in a little over 2 years. As usual my training regimen has been sporadic to say the least and the furthest I've managed was a little over 11km while we were on holiday in southern France. It wasn't quick, and it probably wasn't pretty to look at, but I was joined by Max - my enthusiastic 5 year old son - at several points during the run and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself. I felt pretty good at the end of it so I'm confident I will finish the half (eventually) in one piece.

While we were in France I suggested to Max that we try a mini triathlon. We have a 12m pool in the garden, a lawn for the transition area and the lane leading away from the house is pretty much traffic free and 200m long. Max swam 2 lengths while I swam 4, and he was very quick getting his trainers on after getting out of the pool (he didn't bother with socks for a start), ran out of the garden gate to the "mount line" and we pedalled off down the lane. Four lengths of the lane later (800m) we were back in the garden, off the bikes and straight out onto the 400m run. We both crossed the finish line smiling.

Max obviously enjoyed himself, as the next morning he exclaimed that he was going to do another one - and ended up doing three(admittedly slightly shorter distances) back-to-back !!!

So 2014 will see me returning to triathlon proper, and my goal is still to complete an Iron distance event by the close of 2016 (the year I turn 40). We bumped into a former Australian pro-triathlete (Christine Hemphill) on the ferry heading back to the UK, and during our conversation she suggested that a 3 year build up to Ironman is pretty ideal, so it's game on !
