Can I be an Ironman by 40 ?
Can I be an Ironman by 40 ?
Having taken part in several pool based sprint events since starting out in 2009, I wanted to celebrate turning 35 by completing the Vitruvian in 2011...with a long term goal of completing an Ironman by the time I'm 40. I'll keep track of the trials and tribulations here.

Looking ahead with added perspective

Today finds me in a rather sombre mood as yesterday afternoon I attended the funeral of a very good friend, she was only just 40 and had spent the last year and a half battling against cancer. Unfortunately what started as breast cancer moved into her lungs and her brain and she lost her fight just over a week ago. She was a larger than life character and much loved by everyone she met, and the turnout yesterday was testament to that.

It's amazing that it takes something like this for you to have a good hard look at your life and reassess things. It has made me realise that I've been really lazy and just looking for excuses not to be out there training - I'm healthy and therefore I have no excuse. I've got a little under 6 months before my big event of 2014, the Vitruvian, and I fully intend to be there at the start line in a better condition than I have ever been in before. And if I can raise some money to support Breast Cancer Care and the local hospice that was there to support my friend then so much the better.

Life is short, so let's make the most of it !
