Can I be an Ironman by 40 ?
Can I be an Ironman by 40 ?
Having taken part in several pool based sprint events since starting out in 2009, I wanted to celebrate turning 35 by completing the Vitruvian in 2011...with a long term goal of completing an Ironman by the time I'm 40. I'll keep track of the trials and tribulations here.

Woke up this morning with aching shoulders and sore legs which make going down stairs a little painful, and the reason ? The Tewkesbury Half Marathon.

Driving up to Tewkesbury yesterday morning I thought that the race was going to be miserable, I drove through some heavy rain and the sky looked really overcast. On arrival however the sun was shining, and aside from some strong wind it was a pleasant morning.

I lined up at the start midway through the section for people estimating a 2 hour finishing time (hindsight suggests I maybe should have started a little further back) and set off at a 5:46 pace over the first kilometer. The next few k's saw me being overtaken by a camel (!!!) and quite a few people, but I settled into a steady pace.

The first 10km were fairly easy, but I started to feel it from there on in - due to a lack of consistant training and only having done one 15km run in the past month - although I didn't slow down to a walk and managed to keep going all the way to the finish. My "Runkeeper" data can be seen here:

This week I shall be attempting to get some swimming logged as I have my first triathlon on Sunday - a sprint event in Gloucester - where I will be lining up alongside my younger brother and sister, and although my brother and I are starting half an hour behind my sister, we will only be 2 minutes apart so it could get quite exciting !
