Ik zal je nooit vergeten - Remembering Ben
by timPJun 2nd 2015
Following on from my last post it is fast approaching the first anniversary of that fateful day when MH17 crashed and still the cause remains speculation. Whilst it wonât change the outcome, knowing how and why it happened may help to bring some form of closure to family and friends.
At the memorial service held in the Netherlands for the passengers and crew at the end of 2014 one of the speakers made a very profound observation.
"a person can die twice, once when the actually die and secondly when they are no longer remembered by family and friends"
Well we are determined that for as long as we live we will do our part to make sure that Benâs memory lives on.
So, to commemorate the first anniversary of the crash and honour Benâs love of sport we have entered three events that will challenge us whilst at the same time act as a vehicle to raise money for two very worthy charities.
The events are:
The Cotswold 226, an Iron distance triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle, 26.2 mile run)
Adidas Thunder Run, a trail race where as a team you run as many 10k laps as possible in 24 hours
Challenge Weymouth, another Iron distance triathlon. This time as a relay with Debbie running the marathon and me swimming and cycling.
To make things a little more challenging the events all happen over a period of 9 weeks and we have a combined age of 105!
The two charities were chosen by Benâs parents and to date through various activities and donations over £8,000 has been raised. They are:
Teenage Cancer Trust and StreetGames
The link to the virgin money giving page is below. If you feel able to make a small donation that would be fantastic, the charities will be extremely grateful and it will help keep us motivated through the three events. More importantly by simply reading this you are helping to keep Benâs memory alive.
Weâll make sure that we report back after each event with how we got on and when they are all done we will share our plans for the rest of the year.
Thanks for reading and the best of luck with all of your own endeavours.
