Holly's Tri mis-adventures
I'm a previously unsporty 20 something that has been trying very hard at tri for the last 6 years with minimal success! I love the sport to the extent that I helped my husband set up 'The Triathlon Shop' three years ago and have recently started working there full-time having given up a career in accountancy.

I'm lucky to be in the industry I love and often get to try out kit before it is released. When I do get to play with fun triathlon toys I tend to write a little review about my experiences. I also like to blog about my pathetic attempts to train and the fun I have in the summer racing and supporting all my friends at races.

Back in the game (ish)

It is now 10 weeks since I had knee surgery and I am finally feeling like I might be turning a corner with my recovery.

I have been able to swim for a couple of weeks now (although no kick allowed!) I've found having my kick taken away from me liberating in a way. For a start it has forced me to swim front crawl only rather than revert to my very comfortable breast stroke whenever I feel tired. It has also really focussed my attention on my pull through the water and after 5 years of (feebly) attempting to conquer front crawl I am finally feeling confident that I am able to drag my body through the water AND breathe! I now swim with a pool buoy between the legs at all times to kill the kick and to help me learn my technique. I'm loving it! So much so I may even start recording my swims again using my pool mate and actually recording them on triblogs (something I have not felt I could do for months now).

In the last 10 days or so I have also got to the point where I can comfortable achieve 120 degrees of flexion in my knee, which is a magical number as it means I can jump back on my Bkool again in the hope of rebuilding my pathetic quads.
One side-affect of having my knee cap moved is that it seems to have increased the impact of my tibial rotation so that I now can no longer pedal a bike without rotating my foot out fairly significantly. This has posed a bit of a problem as I have been hitting the top tube with my knee and my crank with my heel.
In the hope of improving this little issue I spent today with Chris Newman of Newfit to see if he could set up my bike specifically for my turbo use while I'm rehabbing my knee. He has done a great job of setting up my bike and cleats so that I am predominately exercising my quads, my hip flexors are opened up and my tibial rotation is under control so that I am not hitting various parts of the bike with my flailing limbs. We tested a few things out and came to a set up which meant I was comfortable and able to get the most out of my turbo sessions. Result! Time for the hard work to begin!

So now I have more fun ways of getting back to tri. Before it was an endless list of non-weight bearing rehab exercises but now I can add some much more fun work to my list. I'm going to enter Burnham Super Sprint again for next year as a target to aim for, but at the moment its all about taking it one step at a time.
