Shoes attached to Bike

Hi all, feedback welcome.

I would like to try attaching a set of shoes to the bike for T1 but before coughing up for capable shoes (wrong way straps, etc) I have a question.

Does anybody who does this find grit to be a problem?

You have a quick rub at your feet with a towel (or wash them, whatever) grab your bike and head for \'bike out\' across whatever the transition area has for a surface. I am worried that I get going on the bike and slip into the shoes only to find I had collected grit on my feet which is now in my shoes causing pain. Is this a problem in practice?

I\'ve done this type of transition quite few times, including practicing in a car park, and I can\'t remember ever getting any gravel in the shoe. Remember you will be cycling with your feet on top of the shoes for a while so i guess this may help knock off any dirt.

One tip (incase you dont already know this one) is to put talc inside the shoe to dry off your feet and put a dab of vasaline in the heel to allow your foot to slide in easily.

Oh and the elastic band technique - where you fix your shoes (+pedals) to the bike using the loop on the back of the shoe and the most convient part of your bike (i usually fix them to part of my front derallier and the rear wheel quick release). So when you jump on yours shoes arent moving all over the place (believe me if they are its a pain in the a***). When you start pedalling they break very easily.

Can I just add to Dave\'s answer that you need to pre-stress or snip into the elastic band this means it breaks more easily when you start pedalling, otherwise it may not break easily (or at all) and you find yourself pedalling with added resistance. I have passed a few riders with this situation in the past. I too do this technique and have no problem with grit, but to get it right practise is the key.

Thanks for the tips so far. Looks like the way to go. Has anybody here had problems with shoes on bike, whether with grit or in general?

I found thru use that the shoe must only have one strap! Much much easier to fasten when looking up at the road!

Anyone here doing Dorney?

any mid season training tips from you elite types out there?

can only squeeze 5hrs per week in my busy timetable of work and family.

posted 2.28 at MK Tri last season, my first Tri and my first Olympic distance, aiming for sub 2.20hrs this season.

Shoes on bike is great, saves slipping on your arse in cleats too. Just check the start of the bike ride is farily straightforward first - some start up hills and thats not easy!
As someone else said, you start with your feet on top, so you can rub the grit off. Some shoes are easier to get into than others - try before you buy for one that suits you.
Good tip on pre-stressing the band - never done it myself, but imagine the shame fo cycling along with one of the postman\'s finest dragging you back!!
