Ironman Quest
The quest of a 45 year old recreational runner who likes nothing better than a lazy night with a beer or glass of wine to become an Ironman

The end of a busy year, the start of an even busier one......

My year of Ironman build up is coming to an end and in September I plucked up the courage, put my money where my mouth is and signed up for the 2015 Ironman Wales event. I have taken part in the Cardiff Half Marathon and the Cardiff 10k Movember run over the last couple of months and have continued to keep my training schedule going, so I'm ending the year in fairly good shape.

My race calender for next year is already filling up but I'm trying to be strategic with the events I'm signing up for, using them as natural stepping stones in my build up to Tenby next September. My training plan will officially start at the end of December and I will try and post my planned schedule and the actual training I do in a hope of keeping myself motivated.

My plan is biased towards running for the first few months as I have been lucky enough to get a place in the London Marathon again but I have tried to be consistent with my swim and bike training as well and hope to be in the pool at least 4 times a week as I know this is my weakest discipline. I hope the events I've entered next year will keep me motivated as well and make sure I don't drop off my training as the months go on.

My swimming has definitely improved from this time last year and I regularly swim at least 2k non stop in my training sessions but I know if anything is going to put doubts in my mind over completing an Ironman event it is the swim. This means lots of swimming in my local pool and trying to get as much open water experience come the spring time as possible.

I would like to say thanks to all the people I've chatted to this year via this site or at events, everybody has been very gracious and forthcoming with good advice and tips. Hopefully like me your all going to enjoy the Christmas period, in the knowledge that even Alistair and Jonny like a mince pie or two
